ARTIST BIO

ALEX WOLKOWICZ works with images, sculptural objects and sound. In her staged installations, her pieces are in dialogue with each other and the viewer. Beyond her studio practice, Alex creates site-responsive portraits of spaces. Through residencies and commissions, she examines external places and herself in relation to them.

Alex has worked with sound artists Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (2014) and the duo Tsantsa (2021). She has collaborated on film projects with artist Alison Nguyen (2016}. She co-founded Cave Collective, a multi-disciplinary art and design practice in 2012. Alex participated at residencies at Elsewhere Artist Collaborative (NC), Flux Factory (NY), Habitable Spaces (TX), Blackstad in residence (Sweden), PADA studios (Portugal) and Lichtenberg studios (Berlin). Past group shows in the US and Europe include ‘Cosmic Laughter’ at Kosmetiksalon Babette, Berlin (2017), Every Woman Biennial, NYC (2019), ‘Ride Your Pony’ at Warrington Contemporary (2019), ‘Take Care’ at 3+1 Arte Contemporânea, Lisbon (2021), ‘Splash’ at Mono, Lisbon (2022), and ‘Journey, That’s A Good Title’ at the Carlton Arms Hotel, NYC (2023). Solo shows include ‘Viscera’ at the Carlton Arms Hotel, NYC (2017) and at Färgkontoret, Stockholm, and Wildwuchs 1220211 at Galleri Torpet, Stockholm (2021). Alex created durational, site-specific installations for Doppelgänger Project’s ‘Eurydice’ in Hillsdale, NY (2019) and for ‘Recreational Grounds 7’ at Aylesbury Estate in London (2023). She has been included in White Column’s curated artist registry since 2021. Alex Wolkowicz is based in New York City.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My interdisciplinary pieces address body, narrative, sexuality, nature, gender and ambivalent emotions in response to family, society, and art. By treating objects like actors in a composition, I examine my own agency, power and vulnerabilities in ways that aim to evoke emotional reactions in the viewer. Working in a theater as a teen, I witnessed narratives being transformed into environments, discovered the world of props and costumes and felt beguiled by their unknown histories. This formative experience resonates throughout my process.

Just as the body is a vessel for emotions, objects contain their own wisdom: working with domestic and found objects as my raw materials, I transpose different qualities to convey tension and contradiction, such as between attraction and disgust, or compliance and disobedience. Sometimes I place myself within my work by revealing parts of my process, such as repeatedly re-applying pigment to an installation or weaving a net in front of an audience. Sound allows me to create a ‘presence’ in a constructed environment. I make field recordings, samples and voice recordings which I then edit and blend to create a soundscape, sometimes integrating live elements. Using my own voice has been a natural progression in revealing myself through my work.
