SPIEGEL IM SPIEGEL
(after Arvo Pärt)

"Beauty is our weapon against nature; by it we make objects, giving them limit, symmetry, proportion. Beauty halts and freezes the melting flux of nature." Camille Paglia

Spiegel im Spiegel explores the idea of human intervention in images of nature with the intention to create landscapes of heightened, artificial beauty.

I used Photoshop to create images of unnatural symmetrical patterns. These perfectly balanced shapes are intended to appeal to the human sense of harmony, but beyond their superficial beauty they reveal new shapes created by their own reflections. I begin to ‘see’ things, in a similar way to how I associate the shapes of clouds with something else when I look at the sky. My mind is free to imagine and explore new worlds, adding my individual interpretations to the images and making them unique to me.
